Renovation and leak detection

A leak is more than an inconvenience: left alone it can damage the structure, the surroundings and the pump.

1″

How much is abnormal? More than 1 inch per week. Many leaks can be resolved within 1 to 3 hours, so if in doubt, book a leak detection survey.

How we find a leak

There are several ways to detect a pool leak, but it is best left to Thames Pool Care for accurate diagnostics.

Bucket test

Fill a bucket, stand it on a pool step and mark the water level inside and outside. It shows whether the loss is evaporation or a leak. This works great for indoor pools.

Pressure testing

We temporarily seal the pipes and use a gauge to check for pressure loss in the flow and return system, following the guidelines set out by SPATA.

Dye testing

For pools with visible cracks or suspect spots, we inject a special dye near the possible leak. If there is a leak, the dye is drawn into the crack or hole.

Concrete, vinyl or fibreglass

The pool type changes how the leak is found. Concrete pools may develop cracks in the surface or plumbing, vinyl-lined pools can suffer tears or punctures, and fibreglass pools often leak around the edges. Each needs a tailored approach.

If you ignore it

A leak can cause structural damage to the foundation and surrounding landscape, higher water bills and an increased risk of equipment failure. When the water level drops too low, the pump can run dry and damage the motor.

Renovate instead of rebuilding

The cost to renovate is often much more cost-effective than building a new pool. Having an existing pool is an excellent starting point.

Cost, 2024 figures from our site

Around 100-140k

Renovating an existing pool

Often less than 30-50k, usually for the same look

Resurfacing and tiles

Plaster, Marbline and other finishes degrade over time. Cracked or discoloured tiles can be replaced with glass, mosaic or natural stone.

Upgrading equipment

A variable-speed pump, Active Filtration Media in your filter, inverter air source heat pumps in place of oil and gas boilers, and LED lighting. We can also install smart pool technology.

Landscaping and amenities

Decking, lighting, furniture or water features. Focus on longevity and seamless integration, not fleeting trends. After all, we live in the Home Counties, not Las Vegas!

Do you have a leak, or a renovation in mind?

Call or email and tell us what the water, the equipment or the liner is doing. We will tell you what we would do next.
